How to choose the right online tutor for your child

A practical checklist for parents — what to look for, what to ask, and how to use a demo class to decide.

Choosing a tutor is one of the most important decisions you can make for your child’s learning — and when classes happen online, it can feel harder to judge who is right. The good news: a few simple checks will tell you almost everything you need to know.

Start with your child’s real need

Before you look at any tutor, be clear about what your child actually needs. It usually falls into one of these:

  • Catching up on concepts they missed or never fully understood.
  • Keeping pace with a demanding syllabus, week by week.
  • Exam preparation for board exams, IGCSE or IB assessments.
  • Building confidence in a subject they have started to avoid.

A tutor who is excellent at exam drilling may not be the right match for a child who needs patience and confidence first. Knowing the goal makes every other decision easier.

Check curriculum fluency, not just subject knowledge

A strong Maths graduate is not automatically a strong CBSE Maths tutor. Each board has its own syllabus, textbooks, question styles and marking. Ask directly:

  • Which curriculum do you teach most often — CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, IB or American?
  • Which grades have you taught recently?
  • How do you prepare students for this board’s exam format?

A tutor who works with your child’s board every day will connect lessons to what is happening in school, instead of teaching generic content.

Look for how they teach, not only what they know

Knowledge is the starting point. What makes a tutor effective is how they explain, check understanding and adapt. In a good session, you should notice that the tutor:

  • Asks your child questions rather than lecturing for the whole class.
  • Explains the same idea in more than one way when needed.
  • Is patient with mistakes and uses them to teach.
  • Ends with a clear idea of what your child should practise next.

Make sure the class is truly one-on-one

Many “online tuition” options are small batches. That can work for some children, but the benefit of one-on-one teaching is that every minute is focused on your child — their pace, their doubts, their gaps. If personal attention is what you want, confirm that the class is one student and one teacher.

Ask about timings and consistency

For families in the Gulf, timing matters. Check that the tutor can offer regular slots that fit school, homework and family time in your time zone. Just as important: will your child have the same tutor each week? Consistency lets a real teaching relationship grow, and the tutor learns exactly where your child needs help.

Ask how progress will be shared

You should never have to guess how things are going. A good tutoring arrangement gives you regular updates — what was covered, where your child is improving, and what still needs work.

Use the demo class to decide

A free demo class is the best way to judge fit. Before it, tell the tutor what your child is struggling with. During it, observe quietly if you can. Afterwards, ask your child:

  1. Did you understand the explanation?
  2. Did you feel comfortable asking questions?
  3. Would you like to learn with this tutor again?

Your child’s answer to the last question matters more than anything on paper.

A quick checklist

  • Clear goal for tutoring agreed
  • Tutor teaches your child’s board and grade regularly
  • Truly one-on-one classes
  • Timings that fit your family’s week
  • Same tutor each class
  • Regular progress updates
  • A demo class your child enjoyed

If a tutor ticks these boxes, you have found a strong match. At EduSolve, every child starts with a free one-on-one demo class, so you can see the teaching for yourself before deciding.
